“And let us not neglect our meeting together…” Hebrews 10:25
In Matthew 18:20 Christ promised us, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” A simple reality about Christian gatherings is this: Christ presence is there is a special way. Of course we can experience the presence of God everywhere, for God is an omnipresent being (e.g., Psalm 139:7-10), having an unlimited presence and not restricted to a particular space. But, when God’s people gather in like-minded trust and adherence to the person and work of Jesus as the Christ, the presence of God is experienced in a unique way. It’s as if we are granted a taste of what is to come (Revelation 21:3).
As a pastor, I hope you find your way to your church this Sunday or to your Christian community whenever they might be meeting. Don’t miss out on the joy and power of Christian community. I believe Charles Spurgeon described the local church well when he said, “imperfect as it is, it is the dearest place on earth” (Best Donation, preached by Charles Spurgeon Dec. 13, 1891).
